Today is international Men’s
day….. yup.. You read that right. There is also a day to celebrate Manhood. And
that’s today!! Now when I read today’s newspaper.. I read an article about
international men’s day. It was the least informative article I came across. It
was written by a bunch of women journalist… ..highlighting the irritating
habits found in men. It was done in good humour. But let me ask one question?
Will that humour had been seen in same light if the same article was written
about women on Women’s day(which is celebrated on 8th march every
year).
Anyways I thought to look
about this day more on net. I hope you all the know the saying…”when in doubt…
google it out”.. so I did the same and found the significance of the day very
important.
The event was first observed
in the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago on 19th November 1999.
The founder of this movement , Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, choose to observe this
day on 19th November, because
it was his father's birthday. Also when I visited the official website of this
day… I came across these lines…
“The November IMD is a significant date as it
interfaces the popular 'Movember' charity event and also with Universal
Children's Day on Nov 20 with which IMD forms a 48 hour celebration of men and
children respectively, and of the special relationships they share.”
If you are thinking what is “movember”…
you can read about it here….
When I thought about it
deeply… I realized that how the work of man for the improvement of the society
is taken granted for. If I look back at my own household… the role my father
played in upbringing me is same as that of my mother. Comparing both would be a
great sin.
The day is observed to
highlight the story of all the men who have somehow helped in shaping up the
society and making it a better place to stay. Not only that.. we also have to
think about all the boys and men who are constantly being trafficked by the
society in slavery or sex trade.
Child labour is prominent in
many parts of the worlds especially India and the labours also include those
small boys who have take up financial responsibility of their family at a small
age just because “they are the man of the house”.
You can read more about this
day on the official website here.
Finally three cheers for us
men!!!!
